Curwall for 6 Sydney Street

6 Sydney Street is a building structure meticulously disguised as an organic sculpture, comprising 15 residences within its framework. Craft-based and inspired by nature, it is located in the inner-city suburb of Prahran. Its form and position establish a fluid connection with the natural environment of the adjacent Orrong Romanis Reserve.
Referencing the sinuous curves of the natural world, this asymmetrical building appears sculpted from a single raw material, abstracted in its formal composition. Its soft floors are interpreted as primary elements, artfully shaped into delicate leaf-like forms resting upon an irregular grid of characteristic fluted columns. The interplay of flowing forms imbues the structure with a sense of visual movement. Deep ripples along the undulating facade create a conscious layering of positive and negative space, integrating intermittent gardens with vegetation growth that further softens the form.
The base of the building is screened by a lush garden, which frames the entry canopy between two fluted columns, accessed via a curved pathway. The entry sequence begins the transition of external concepts further inward through a refined palette of natural materials and meticulously crafted details. The first indication is the timber door adorned with a sculpted, cast bronze, silver-dipped door handle.
Each residence is unique, offering distinct light, views, and terraces. Distant planting, parkland, and city vistas are framed by expansive glazing and horizontal planes. Many internal surfaces are softened through the use of curved volumes and plasterwork, drawing inspiration from the external form. Meticulously crafted joinery in natural timber and book-matched marble adds warmth, contrast, and a sense of refined minimalist luxury. Bathrooms are wrapped in luminous travertine mosaic, providing subtle texture to the space and contrasting with solid vanities in stained timber and stone.
Developed in collaboration with V-Leader, 6 Sydney Street is the curvaceous outcome for its urban block, breaking the walled streetscape created by its rectilinear neighbours. Its polished form carefully experiments with ideas of solid and void within a monochromatic visual quality. Its connection to nature, use of movement, and artistry result in a distinctive outcome that contrasts markedly with the surrounding residential context.
